Izzy’s Upcycled Fashion Design Challenge
Grades: 6th–12th
Length: 5 months
Goal: Create 5–10 pieces of upcycled fashion to showcase in a final runway show.
Program Includes:
- Weekly or biweekly sewing lessons (group & one-on-one)
- Unlimited access to the Makerspace
- All sewing tools provided
- Community fashion show at end: in March
- Prizes for creativity, technique, and sustainability
Program Schedule:
Month 1: Learn the Basics
- Intro to sewing, machine safety, hand stitching
- Practice on scrap fabric
- Simple projects (tote bag, pillowcase, etc.)
Month 2: Upcycle Kickoff
- Select/design first few fashion pieces
- Learn how to deconstruct clothing
- Start pattern-making and sewing
Month 3&4: Full Production Mode
- Weekly progress check-ins
- One-on-one support
- Photo documentation for portfolios
Month 5: Polish & Prep
- Finalize 5–10 garments
- Rehearse runway walk
- Marketing for the show
